HISTORY OF LOOMIS GARAGE

In 1919 the first building was established by Bernhard Mehl as an auto repair shop known as General Garage at the corner of Taylor Road (former Olive Street and future US Route 40) and Walnut Street. Four garage bays and office space were later added and the property operated as Mehl Chevrolet between 1929 and 1956. Since 1956 the property has been the site for several businesses including a Firestone tire store, a savings & loan bank, and a law office.

One hundred years later 3701-3705 Taylor Road is still owned and operated by the Mehl family and is being renovated to accommodate retail commercial in the heart of the Loomis Central Commercial District with a focus on honoring its local history.

Founded in 1851 and incorporated in1984 Loomis maintains a rich and vibrant agricultural heritage. The town is currently in the process of revitalizing the downtown area located between its two historic fruit-packing sheds: High Hand and The Blue Goose. The Town of Loomis is creating and promoting the “shed-to-shed” experience with new sidewalks, parking, crosswalks, street lighting, as well as historic fruit label murals and plaques all focused on supporting the small-town shopping and dining experience.
